Ares, God of War, was the son of
Zeus and
Hera,
both of whom despised him. In fact, the Greeks did not care for Ares much
at all, and in The Iliad Homer calls him murderous and bloodstained, and
also a coward. Occasionally a warrior might "rejoice in the delight
of battle," but most found Ares a God to be respectfully avoided. He
was ruthless and bloodthirsty, and is accompanied by his sister Eris
(Discord), her son Strife, and the Goddess of War Enyo (Latin Bellona),
who trails behind her Terror, Trembling, and Panic. Ares had no cities
where he was worshiped. |

This Ares has been
painted a deep blood red, with a fierce countenance, and mouth open in a
perpetual battle cry. His jaw is strong, and a small black moustache and goatee
frame his mouth. His headband is decorated with the swords that are the
stock of his
trade.
Any resemblance to images of the Christian Devil are coincidental, but not
entirely inappropriate.
