Arlecchina
is the sister mask to famous Arlecchino, and in many ways his complete opposite.
Where he is clumsy she is graceful, where he is stupid she is clever. She
is far more refined, subtle and ultimately content with her lot in life than her
counterpart. Arlecchina is a derivative of the traditional Columbina, the
origin of the French Soubrette. Arlecchina started appearing in the
eighteenth century.
In art, she wears Arlecchino's traditional diamond pattern costume. Sometimes she is
masked, sometimes not, and sometimes her mask is only a little one across her
eyes. Our Arlecchina mask is very similar to the traditional Arlecchino mask in
that it allows an actress to play on par with her male
counterpart. |
