Artemis, the Virgin
Goddess of the Hunt, Apollo's twin sister,
daughter of Zeus and Leto, was the Goddess of the
Moon. She has many names because many cultures had moon goddesses:
Selene, Pheobe, Diana, Hecate. She is the protectress of youth, but
like the moon, she is chang eable in her nature, and can become a harsh and
cruel mistress. In The Iliad, she will not allow the Greek
fleet to sail to Troy until a maiden is sacrificed to her.

This Artemis is only half flesh, her other half as shining
and impersonal as the Moon she represents. Her hair is bound on one
side and free on the other, signifying her maidenhood and her position as
the Goddess of wild creatures. This mask is both the Goddess and the
Moon itself, a personality partially revealed, and, like the Moon, partially
hidden and obscure. |
