Demeter,
daughter of Chronus and Rhea, was the Goddess of Agriculture (sometimes
specifically Goddess of Corn). The major myth associated with her deals
with her only daughter Persephone, the maiden of the spring. Persephone
was abducted by Hades, who fell in love with her. Demeter was
distraught. She withheld her gifts from the earth and the world fell into
an unending winter. |
Finally Hades was persuaded to release Persephone,
but not until after she had eaten four pomegranate seeds,
thus ensuring that she would be forced to return to the underworld for four
months of the year. When Persephone returns to Demeter, her mother allows
spring to bloom, but while she is in the underworld, her mother mourns and
the world falls into winter.

This
Demeter has a simple, rounded facial structure, to emphasize
both her maternal and her rural nature. Her
dace is framed with a crown of wheat, berries, and other manifestations of her
bounty. |
