Dionysos,
God of the Vine, was the son of
Zeus and the mortal Semele. His mother
fell victim to Hera's revenge; Hera convinced Semele to ask Zeus to reveal
himself in his true form. Semele asked Zeus to swear by the river Styx to
grant her a favor, an oath even Zeus could not break. Zeus showed himself
to her, and the pregnant Semele was incinerated instantaneously by his
glory. But Zeus managed to save the fetus, implanting him into his
own thigh, and Dionysos was born some time later. Dionysos
represents
the power of emotion rather than Apollonian reason. Those who do not
acknowledge his power face destruction or madness. |

This Dionysos is a
soft-faced youth, flushed with the intoxication he is famous for inspiring.
Lips parted with a hint of a smile, Dionysos knows what lies just beneath your
civilized exterior. The wild grapes framing his face are symbolic of the
treacherous bounty he offers. This mask is depictive not of that poseur Roman
Bacchus - but a representation of the unleashing of primordial exultation that
lies at the heart of all humanity.
For Performers - be aware that as pictured this mask is
quite heavy to wear - adjustments can be made if this mask is being
purchased for a performance.
