Il Dottore is one of the classic Commedia Dell'Arte Characters. He was a
response to all the new "scholars" pouring out of the new University
at Bologna. Dottore thinks he knows everything, but he really knows nothing much
at all; his Latin, which he is constantly spouting, is atrocious. In fact,
the only thing he is usually right about is the location of the nearest
feast. Il Dottore is a gourmand in extemis, led by his
belly. |

This Dottore mask, while
not strictly traditional, does conform to the traditional "T" shape
that characterizes these masks. His nose is a pig's snout, emphasizing his
penchant for gluttony. His eyebrows form two giant question marks,
which highlight Il Dottore's duality; maximum conviction, minimal
intelligence.
