frequently asked questions

What are the masks made of?

All the masks are made of either papier mâché or Neoprene, and are painted with an acrylic paint.  Neoprene is a non-toxic semi-rigid latex.

Why does it take so long to get my mask?

Because our masks are made to order,  we ask for a  three to six week lead time to get your mask to you.  Often it will not take that long, but since many of our masks are ordered for performances, we need the time to guarantee we can get you your mask by your performance date.  If your order is very large (15+ ) we may need extra time.  We do not take orders we do not believe in good faith we can fill by the date needed.

Why do I have to pay before you will begin work on my mask?

Unfortunately, because of the impersonal nature of the internet, we get many inquiries, requests and even orders that do not follow through with payment.  While we understand the time crunch many performers are under, we do require that a financial commitment be made before we begin processing the order.

I work for a School that will be purchasing the masks, and they do payments by purchase order - is that ok?

Arlecchina's Masks has made masks for many schools, and we will happily accept a purchase order to confirm your order, and begin your masks.

How should I care for my mask?

The masks require little maintenance.  If you are going to display your mask, please do not hang it by the elastic strap, as this can destroy the elasticity and render the strap useless.  You can clean your mask by using a slightly damp cloth.  We recommend wiping the inside of the mask before and after use, particularly if it is used in a classroom setting.  Do not immerse the mask in water, and do not display the mask where it will be exposed to direct sunlight.

What if my mask is damaged?

Our masks are like children to us, and therefore we are happy to offer to repair damage to our masks for one year for free, whatever the cause. (If the mask has been completely destroyed, however, there is not much we can do). We only ask that you pay shipping both ways.   After one year, a modest repair fee will be charged.  If you wish to try to repair damage yourself, we are happy to offer suggestions to assist you. Please contact us via email, and we will give you an address to ship the mask to for repair.

Is my mask an Original, or a "one of a kind"?

While each mask is unique, they are not "one of a kind" unless specified.

I am a performer and want to use this mask in my show. Is that okay?

We encourage the use of our masks in performance.  We ask that you give credit to the Maskmaker in your program.  Also, please be aware that other performers may be using the same mask, unless you commission and buy the design rights to a mask. We  recommend that performers ask for adjustments in masks for the particular needs of their show.   And if you want to send us photographs of your mask in performance, we love to receive them!

Can I make changes to a design?

Minor changes, changes in palette, and small adjustments may be requested by the purchaser and made at the Maskmaker's discretion.  There may be an additional charge for changes.

I have an idea for a mask. Can you make it for me?

We are happy to discuss commissions for new work.  New masks created for clients are generally added to the masks we offer to the public, however, if you wish to have a mask created only for you, we can discuss that as well.
