Hades, God of the underworld, was the brother of Zeus and Poseidon. He was the King of the Dead -- but not Death Himself. He rarely left his dark realm, and most would not have welcomed him. He was unrelenting and inflexible, but he was a Just God. The Greek underworld was not the equivalent of the Christian Hell, but rather a shadowy realm where ghosts wandered in a dream.
This Hades has been painted black with white highlights, creating an eerie skeletal effect. From his forehead springs Cerberus, the vicious three headed dog who guards the way to the underworld.
