Hera,
Queen of the Gods, was both wife and sister to Zeus. She was the protector
of Marriage, and married women were her special care. Ironically, her own
marriage was nothing to be envied, as Zeus was one of the greatest philanderers
of all time. Chasing after and punishing his lovers was her constant pastime. In
one case, Zeus turned his lover Io into a white heifer to hide her from his
wife. Hera was not fooled. She asked Zeus to give her the animal, and as
Zeus couldn't refuse without giving himself away, he acquiesced. Hera set a
man with a hundred eyes, Argus, to watch over Io. Argus always had some of
his eyes open, so Zeus could not free poor little Io. Finally Zeus sent Hermes
to kill Argus. Hermes told Argus stories until all of his eyes went to
sleep, and then killed him. Hera took his eyes and set them in the tail of
the peacock, her favorite bird. |

This Hera is a woman still beautiful, but no longer young and fresh.
She has wealth and power but she is no longer able to
hold her husband to
her through her beauty. Her eyes are painted with the peacocks' dramatic colors,
and though this makes her fantastic, no cosmetic can make her as attractive as
the young mortals and demi-goddesses that lure her husband.
