Hermes,
the Messenger God, God of Thieves and Commerce, was the son of
Zeus and
Maia,
daughter of Atlas. He is very popular, appearing in more myths than any
other God. He wore winged sandals and a winged cap. He was swift and
graceful, sly and cunning. His attributes have inspired many artistic
imitations; from Shakespeare's Puck to Twain's Tom Sawyer, and has many
indigenous counterparts, if not exact analogues - the Native American Fox,
the Norse god Loki, the eastern Monkey King and others. He and th e
other Greek Gods and their individual attributes were the archetypes of many
deities found throughout the western tradition (from Alexander's time). |
This Hermes has an impish grin, fluttering wings at his temples, and a
headband of golden coins to reflect his status as the God of Merchants.
He is the color of the sky he flies through. His eyes twinkle
with the mischievousness he is
infamous for. He is a friendly God, more apt to aid individual humans or
Gods who have either earned his favor or who scare him witless, i.e. Zeus. |
