It is at the point that the negative is made that the process varies for
Neoprene masks. The negative is first thoroughly cleaned of Vaseline and
allowed to dry out for several days. The negative must be very dry in
order to be "thirsty" enough to hold the neoprene.
Neoprene is then poured into the
negative and allowed to sit for approximately an hour, then poured back out
again. What remains clinging to the sides of the plaster negative will dry
over the next day and be peeled out to become the actual mask. It is the
trimmed, sanded, painted and finished much the same as the papier mâché
masks.
