This dark mask would have been used in the Greek tragedies such as Aeschylus' Oresteia or Sophocles' Oedipus.  None of the original masks survive from the days of the Greek theatre, however, sculptures like the picture below are found as part of sculptural decoration of buildings, giving us a good idea of what the Greek masks looked like. The original piece (below) is currently housed in the National Archeological Museum in Athens.   While we imagine the Greeks used colors in their masks, we don't know what kind of palette they chose. This mask has been painted in dark violet tones to enhance its somber nature.  The Greeks would have completed this mask with some sort of cap or wig so that the actors entire head would have been covered.

Actors working with this mask will discover movement patterns that are dictated by the limited ability to see, as well as the power and extraordinarily high level of play of this mask.
